The problem with a key USB in Mac, as an external hard drive, is that it is easy to mislay it or to forget it some share. It can be able to you to store rather confidential data there and in the event of loss, the damage can be more important than it does not appear to with it.
The idea consists in creating, on the key USB, an image disc protected by password. Your Mac has the application necessary, it acts of Utility of disc (Applications > Utilitaires > Utilitaire of disc).
Connect the key to your Mac and open the Utilitaire application of disc. If need be, format the key with the format Mac journalized wide OS (most of the time, the keys are with the format FAT 32 or MS-DOS, allowing as they are used on Mac or Windows).

Give him a name, it will be easier to identify it thereafter, (here it is called key-secure), then click on the delete button.

In the menu File, select the New order > empty image disc.

Name this image disc, infos-secrete for example. In the pull-down menu Cuts, click on Personnaliser, the idea being to give him a size hardly lower than that of the key.

Leave with the pull-down menu Format, the choice by defect, which must be Mac journalized wide OS. In the pull-down menu Coding, choose the security level. Apple recommends AES 128 bits, but you are only judge of the level of coding which your data deserve.

In the pull-down menu Partitions, the choice by single defect Partition: count of Apple partition is the good. Lastly, in small Format of image, select the option image disc in read/write (the goal of the play being to be able to add files, if necessary). Check that all the selected parameters correspond well to those which are below illustrated before clicking on the Create button

Last thing, seize a password for this image disc and by prudence, notch the Mémoriser box the password in the trousseau. You will notice in the passing that Mac OS X indicates the force of your password to you. Mine is weak, do not take it in example.

The creation of this image disc will more or less take time, according to the size which you defined.

When you connect this key on another Mac that on which was created the made safe image disc, it will be necessary to provide the password (by creating the password, you notched the box making it possible to preserve it in the Trousseau of access, it will thus not be asked to you. If, on the other hand you did not notch this box, the password will be required to assemble the made safe image disc on the desk).

Do not forget that it will be necessary to then eject the whole in two stages: initially the image disc, then key USB.
It is of course also possible to make cohabit on key USB in MAC of the data protected in an image disc quantified with nonprotected data. It is enough in fact to define a size of image disc largely lower than the capacity of the key.
